What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Nature and Sunshine

Naturopathic medicine is a system of health care that has been around for hundreds of years. It has grown and changed over time integrating aspects from conventional, holistic and alternative fields of medicine, including evidence-based therapies.

This form of health-care strives to take into consideration the whole person, not just their symptoms. It acknowledges that to be truly healthy, the underlying cause of disease must be removed. It also supports the body’s innate drive to be healthy.

Therefore, to improve health Dr. Davidson, a naturopathic doctor, will take a detailed client history along with ordering laboratory testing, imaging and perform physical exams as necessary. The doctor will use this information and determine which therapies will be most effective in reversing or modifying disease progression. She will also consider therapies that will boost one’s natural immune system.

There are 6 main principals of Natropathic Medicine:

  1. The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae): We recognize the bodies inherent self-healing process, and so act to uncover and remove obstacles to healing to help facilitate that process.
  2. Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam):We seek to identify and remove the true causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

  3. First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere):We aim to utilize medicinal substances that minimize harmful side effects and use the least force necessary to diagnose and treat while avoiding when possible the supression of symptoms.

  4. Doctor as Teacher (Docere):We strive to educate our patients and encourage self-responsibility for health.

  5. Treat the Whole Person:We treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors.

  6. Prevention:We emphasize the prevention of disease by making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.

This naturopathic practice includes the following diagnostic and therapeutic modalities: clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing, nutritional medicine, botanical medicine, public health measures, hygiene, counseling, minor surgery, homeopathy and prescription medication.

The American Association of Naturopathic Medicine (AANM)  explains naturopathic medicine as

“ a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process.  The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods.”
